Tinnitus maskers are devices that produce “white noise” sounds in order to help the tinnitus sufferer ignore the ringing, hissing, buzzing or clicking sounds that he hears inside his auditory system.

“White noise” is a technological innovation wherein different sounds with different frequencies will be combined into a single piece of audio material.

However before a tinnitus sufferer is recommended with tinnitus maskers as tinnitus treatment, his medical condition should be first ascertained. As we all know, the incessant ringing, buzzing, hissing or clicking sound may be connected to an internal disorder.

Only after a thorough medical checkup that clears him of health disorders like Mernier’s disease, hypertension, anemia or even tumors , that the patient will be approached with tinnitus maskers as treatment.

How the Tinnitus Masker was Conceptualized

The Oregon Health Science Society funded the first formal research group that conducted studies about tinnitus way back in 1973. The group was led by Dr. Jack Vernon whose main concern then, was that their tests and findings relied only on animal models.

The breakthrough came when a fellow doctor from California who was suffering from tinnitus came to visit as well as consulted with Doctor Vernon about his worsening tinnitus.

It was during this visit that the doctor from California experienced something that he never experienced before in the two years that he was afflicted with his tinnitus.

The doctors were passing an outdoor fountain that was creating soothing sounds of running and falling water and this stopped the California doctor in his tracks. He realized that while walking alongside the fountain, he did not hear the intrusive tinnitus sound that has been bothering him for the past two years.

The rest that followed is history which in fact earned Dr. Vernon the title of Father of Tinnitus Masking. To date, Dr. Vernon’s clinic has helped more than 6,000 tinnitus sufferers with his wearable tinnitus maskers.
